  1. The Black Death:

The Black Death was a pandemic that swept across Europe between 1347 and 1351. The plague killed approximately 50 million people. In 2013, scientists discovered evidence of Yersinia pestis bacteria in human remains dating back 5,000 years. The disease spread rapidly due to unsanitary conditions and overcrowding. People were dying at a rate of about 1,500 per day. Most victims died within two weeks after symptoms appeared. A bacterium called Yersinia pestis causes the plague.

Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, weakness, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and swollen lymph nodes. If left untreated, death could occur within days.

The Holocaust was a genocide carried out by Nazi Germany and its allies against European Jews, Romani people, homosexuals, political opponents, prisoners of war, and others deemed undesirable. The Nazis implemented systematic extermination policies involving murder, starvation, medical experiments, slave labor, and mass rape. An estimated 6 million Jews and 2 million Gypsies perished in concentration camps and gas chambers. A further 12 million non-Jewish Europeans were deported to ghettos and work camps where they often suffered similar fates. At least 500,000 Polish military personnel were executed following the German invasion of Poland in September 1939.

3. The Cambodian Killing Fields:

From 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime under Pol Pot and Ieng Sary forcibly removed nearly 2 million Cambodians from their homes, killing an estimated 1.8 million of them. These deaths constitute one-fifth of all known casualties resulting from armed conflict since 1950. After seizing power in a coup on November 17, 1970, the Khmer Rouge established Democratic Kampuchea, a communist state ruled according to Mao Zedong’s theories of agrarian socialism. The new regime quickly became notorious for its brutal treatment of the civilian population, especially those with dissenting views. By January 1976, the number of dead reached an estimated 1.7 million.

4. Manson family murders:

The Manson Family Murders were a series of related violent crimes committed by Charles Manson’s cult group known as the “Family”. These incidents occurred between August 1969 and September 1970, culminating in the murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles, California. A total of nine people were killed. Two members of the Family have been convicted of murder; Susan Atkins and Patricia Krenwinkel. Atkins received two death sentences while Krenwinkel was sentenced to seven years to life imprisonment. Both women appealed their convictions and sentences twice before they were finally executed in the gas chamber in San Quentin State Prison on November 19, 2018.

5. Neeraj Grover’s murder (2008):

Neeraj Grover was murdered on November 2nd, 2008 at around 11 am after he left his house in Mumbai, India. He was shot in the head and neck while sitting inside his car. His death remains unsolved. Grover was a successful businessman who worked at several companies including Wockhardt Pharmaceuticals, a company owned by the pharmaceutical giant Cipla Ltd. He had been diagnosed with cancer about three years before his death.

There was speculation over what kind of weapon was used in the murder. According to some reports, the gun allegedly used to kill Grover was a 9mm pistol that belonged to his wife. In 2009, a special CBI court convicted seven men of conspiracy to murder in connection with the crime. One of them, Dinesh Khanna, was sentenced to death, while four others received jail sentences ranging between 10 and 20 years. In 2010, the Bombay High Court upheld the convictions and death sentence imposed on Khanna.

However, the conviction in 2011 of four other men, including a former policeman, led to protests across India. A total of 18 people associated with the case were charged under the Indian Penal Code section 302 – which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. All of those accused were acquitted except for Khanna.

On April 1st, 2014, the Supreme Court overturned the acquittal of Khanna. On September 29th, 2014, the Delhi High Court ordered his retrial. On October 2nd, 2014, the Bombay High Court again dismissed the appeal filed by Khanna. Thus, the case is still pending in court.
